Originally built in 1835 as a garden retreat, the property later became a hunting lodge and the main residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II.

The palace complex was enlarged in the early 20th century under architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob in an Indo-Saracenic style combining Rajasthani, Mughal and colonial motifs.

The hotel contains 78 rooms and suites within a restored former royal residence rather than a conventional modern tower.
