Built in 1464 and associated with the Chauhan lineage of Prithviraj Chauhan III, the fort was abandoned in 1947, acquired in 1986 and restored before reopening as a hotel in 1991. Early restoration focused on palace areas including Suraj Paul and Tulsi Chowk.
Rather than forming a symmetrical palace block, the property follows the hill through seven palace wings, descending terraces and multiple levels. Spiral staircases, tunnels, verandahs, arched colonnades, courtyards and elevated viewpoints preserve the character of the original fort.
The restored complex incorporates hanging gardens, courtyards, terraces, roof-garden areas and an amphitheatre alongside hospitality spaces. Conference halls, dining rooms, pools and gardens are inserted into the historic shell without removing its ruinous fort-palace character.
The 92 rooms and suites are distributed across 14 levels cut into the hillside and located throughout different palace wings rather than on standardized hotel floors. The irregular layout makes the fort’s stairways, terraces and changing elevations part of the accommodation experience.
