A Chettiar Home Recast as a Living Heritage Stay

A family mansion with Chettinad identity

Built more than a century ago for K. V. A. L. Ramanathan Chettiar’s eldest daughter, Visalakshi, the property presents a palatial Chettiar home rather than a conventional modern resort. Its concept centres on experiencing 19th-century Chettinad domestic heritage.

Art deco geometry and period craftsmanship

The architecture incorporates art deco geometry, strong colours and the restrained, bold lines associated with the 1920s. Period-style furniture, Burma teak craftsmanship and largely preserved original interiors retain the mansion’s historic character.

Restoration through local skills

CGH Earth restored the mansion in 2007 with local artisans and traditional materials, including Athangudy tile makers, stone workers, carpenters and weavers. Former grand halls now serve as guest areas while maintaining their palatial atmosphere; the property also uses renewable energy, rainwater harvesting and waste-management practices.

Heritage Rooms Within the Original Mansion

Fifteen rooms, two heritage categories

The accommodation comprises 15 heritage rooms housed within the restored mansion. Publicly identified categories are Chettinad Rooms and Deluxe Suites, maintaining the property’s focus on mansion-based heritage accommodation rather than a separate room block.

Balconies and palatial interiors

Some rooms have balconies, while the accommodation retains the character of the original residence through preserved interiors and period-style furnishings. The suites provide the property’s clearest accommodation format for a more spacious heritage stay.

Chettinad Cooking at Sapadu Shala

An authentic local dining venue

Sapadu Shala is the property’s named restaurant, with “sapadu” meaning a meal in Tamil. It focuses on Indian and local cuisine and is presented as a culinary expression of Chettinad tradition rather than a generic all-day dining room.

Flexible breakfast and dietary options

Breakfast is offered à la carte, with continental and vegetarian options listed. The property can also accommodate vegetarian, halal and gluten-free requests.
